Backup Error: Could not receive from mobilebackup2 (-4)

If you see this error in the Supervisor App during backup:

Error making backup. Check your device connection and pairing.
ERROR: Could not receive from mobilebackup2 (-4)

This usually means the computer and the iPhone or iPad are not communicating properly for the backup.

What this means

This error is commonly caused by:

  • The device not being properly paired with the computer
  • The device being locked during backup
  • A connection issue with the cable or USB port
  • Using a cable that does not reliably support data transfer
  • An interrupted Apple backup service connection

What to try

  1. Disconnect the device from the computer.
  2. Unlock the iPhone or iPad.
  3. Reconnect the device.
  4. Tap Trust This Computer if prompted.
  5. Keep the device unlocked and try the backup again.

If it still fails:

  • Restart the iPhone or iPad
  • Restart the computer
  • Use an Apple OEM cable or certified data cable
  • Try a different USB port
